MAST Lab

Alexander R. Daros

Director receives Insight Development Grant

September 25, 2024

Dr. Daros received an Insight Development Grants from SSHRC to support research in its early stages. Insight grants are intended to allow academics to expand their research, deepening understanding of societal challenges. Seven University of Windsor researchers were awarded close to $500,000 in the 2024 competition.
The project in the MAST Lab will focus on emotion dysregulation, which is a core construct used to predict mental disorder occurrence and symptom severity. In fact, up to 75% of mental disorders have symptom criteria related to problems in emotion regulation. These problems tend to improve with psychological intervention. However, our ability to assess emotion dysregulation needs improvement. This is due to a lack of measures to assess its core aspects and a reliance on self-report measures, rather than incorporating behavioural and physiological correlates. The goal of this project is to innovate how we define, model, and measure emotion dysregulation using a biopsychosocial model. This project will work to gather data through a multimethod approach using self-report, behavioural, and physiological measures, and then use findings to provide recommendations for a standardized assessment of emotion dysregulation. The final objective is to engage in knowledge mobilization and to educate a wider audience on the importance of emotion dysregulation in relation to mental health.
